Overview of Oral Proficiency Interview
The Foreign Language Education program and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction requires that candidates pass an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI), administered by Language Testing International. To sign up for your OPI, please go to the following link: https://www.languagetesting.com/. Then, follow these directions.
Be advised that you are instructed to take the Oral Proficiency Interview by Computer (OPIc). The test itself costs $70, plus a fee of $35 for required webcam proctoring (total $105). If you are completing an OPIc, you must therefore, be at a computer with webcam capabilities. The test allows you to demonstrate the full range of your language skills up to as high as the Superior level on the ACTFL Proficiency Scale. Once your test has been rated, you will have access to an Official ACTFL Certificate of Proficiency, which can be a valuable credential.
If you have any questions or need assistance while you are filling out the application, please contact test processing at: 1-800-486-8444.
How webcam proctoring works:
- Candidates will need to log into their LTI account and connect to a live proctor.
- Via webcam, the proctor will verify the identity of the candidate by viewing a state issued ID (i.e. Driver’s license, passport, etc.)
- For internet delivered tests (OPIc), the proctor will sign the candidate into the test – from there, the candidate will begin the test.
